Alan Hansen: Liverpool legend in hospital with serious illness

Former Liverpool and Scotland defender Alan Hansen is seriously ill in hospital, his former club have confirmed.

Hansen, 67, made more than 600 appearances for Liverpool between 1977 and 1991, winning eight league titles, three European Cups and two FA Cups.

He also won 26 caps for Scotland and was part of the team that reached the 1982 World Cup finals.

After retiring from playing, Hansen became a respected football pundit, working for the BBC for over 20 years.

Liverpool said in a statement: "We are sad to hear the news that Alan Hansen is seriously ill in hospital.

"Alan has been a great servant to Liverpool both as a player and a pundit and we send him and his family our best wishes at this difficult time."

No further details about Hansen's condition have been released.
