Historic Smith Tower And Butler Garage Acquired By Local Ownership

Historic Smith Tower and Butler Garage Acquired by Local Investors

Smith Tower, the 42-story building that became Seattle's first skyscraper in 1914, has been acquired by a group of local investors.

In a landmark transaction announced on August 9, 2024, Seattle-based GT Capital acquired the 110-year-old tower and neighboring Butler Garage, underscoring the enduring appeal of Seattle's historic architecture and optimism for the future of downtown.

The tower holds the distinction of being both the tallest building on the West Coast and the second tallest in the United States when it was completed in 1914. The tower's original owners intended to name it the Smith Tower after its three main investors, but the name was dropped due to a disagreement. However, the name was restored in 1979.

The tower has been a popular tourist destination, known for its stunning views of the city, Puget Sound, and the Cascade Mountains. It is also home to a variety of businesses, including retail shops, restaurants, and offices.

The neighboring Butler Garage, built in 1928, is one of Seattle's oldest surviving parking garages. It is a Seattle Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The acquisition of Smith Tower and the Butler Garage by local investors is a significant step in the preservation of Seattle's architectural heritage. The new owners plan to renovate the tower and the garage, while preserving their historic character.
