All-Defense Teams: How They're Selected and 2024 Winners

Updated Selection Process Brings Changes to All-Defense Voting

The NBA has announced some tweaks to the All-Defense structure for the 2023-24 season. The end-of-season awards are still voted on by a global panel of 100, but the voting process has been adjusted to better reflect the modern game.

First Rookie to Earn All-Defensive First Team Honors

One of the most notable changes is the addition of a "Defensive Player of the Year" award, which will be given to the player who receives the most votes from the panel. In the past, the Defensive Player of the Year award was simply given to the player who made the All-Defensive First Team with the most votes.

Another change is the addition of a "Defensive All-Rookie Team." This team will be selected by a panel of NBA coaches and will honor the top defensive rookies in the league.

The 2023-24 All-Defensive Teams were announced on May 21, 2024. The First Team includes Marcus Smart, Mikal Bridges, Rudy Gobert, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Bam Adebayo. The Second Team includes Jaren Jackson Jr., Robert Williams III, Anthony Davis, Jrue Holiday, and Dejounte Murray.
